Coverage and data
Where the API works, which data sources and licences it uses, the Data Release cadence, and known gaps.
Coverage Area
United States and Canada. For geocoding, other countries return an empty result set with HTTP 200.
Data sources
| Used for | Source |
|---|---|
| Base map, places, routing graph | OpenStreetMap (Geofabrik US and Canada extracts), ODbL |
| US addresses | USDOT National Address Database (NAD) |
| Canadian addresses | StatCan National Address Register (NAR) |
| Addresses (both countries) | Overture Maps addresses |
| US street interpolation | Census TIGER (via Nominatim) |
| US postcodes | Census ZCTA5 |
| Canadian postcodes | StatCan FSA boundaries; full 6-character codes from NAR-derived points |
| Timezones | timezone-boundary-builder 2026f, with tzdb 2026f |
| Elevation | Tilezen skadi tiles |
Address Point results carry the source and licence in datasource (see Concepts).
Data Release
The first national Data Release is 20261102-a (built 2026-11-02; deploy to production was still pending when this was written). Releases are full rebuilds on a monthly cadence (ADR 0004), so data is frozen between releases and Place IDs stay stable while the underlying thing exists.
Known gaps
-
ZCTA is not a USPS ZIP. US postcodes come from Census ZCTA5 polygons. PO-box-only ZIPs have no polygon.
-
Special postcodes are absent. Codes like
K1A 0B1are not in the data. -
Empty boundary types.
/boundaries/part-ofhas data layers foradministrative,postal_code,timezone(timezone-boundary-builder) and OSM polygons (neighborhood,place,region,political,historic,protected_area,national_park,aboriginal_lands,census,school_district,forest,hazard,regional_park,religious_administration,low_emission_zone,public_transport,traditional). Onlyreligious,municipality,barony,town,healthandhistoric:administrativeare empty./boundaries/consists-ofhas data foradministrativeandpostal_codeonly. -
Territories. Puerto Rico and other US territories are not confirmed in coverage. During the build, Overture codes PR, GU, VI, AS and MP as separate countries and those rows were dropped, and Overture has no Hawaii or New Hampshire rows (see
docs/handoff/16-RESUME.md). Test your area before relying on it. -
Fields never returned. Examples: isoline
details=population, mapmatchinglookup_step_osmtagsandlookup_osm_overlap. Each endpoint page lists its own. -
Traffic. The
trafficparameter is accepted and ignored; durations are free-flow.
Performance
Phase 14 load test (docs/handoff/14-load-test.md), 16 concurrent clients on the Mac Studio against the Indiana and Prince Edward Island Dev Extract. These are not production numbers; the document says the national re-run is the one that counts.
| Endpoint | Requests per second | p95 (ms) |

Isoline and matrix dominate latency (Valhalla compute).
